Set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia, The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and quirky characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. Willard Russell, a victim of genocide in the South Pacific, cannot save his beautiful wife Charlotte from a painful death from cancer, no matter how much she sacrifices on her “prayer log”.
There’s Carl and Sandy Henderson, a husband-and-wife team of serial killers who troll America’s highways in search of suitable models to photograph and destroy. There spider-handling preacher Roy and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick, Theodore, are on the run from the law. And caught in the middle of it all is Arwin Eugene Russell, Willard and Charlotte’s orphaned son, who grows up to be a good but violent man in his own right.

The Devil All the Time is a slow-burn, thriller and melodrama with excellent acting, exceptional editing and precise cinematography. I like to focus on the topic of evil disguised as good. The film focuses on people who are thinking that they are doing good under the guise of religion, God and divine right, and not the harsh reality that they are terrible people who are committing horrific atrocities.
Unfortunately, this is true to life. Obviously, this does not mean that all religious people are bad. This is because people are using religion as an excuse to commit crimes. The performances are all really good, and offer a peek into the minds of sick, despicable humans. The film is very disturbing because of how true to life and how it focuses on real life themes.
It’s very well crafted, and I love how it’s presented, using voice over narration to direct the flow of the film. The plot is a bit convoluted, and the story could have been thought through more. Get ready to slow down in the disturbing madness. This is one for the ages.
