Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) review
For me Star Wars has always been about good storytelling.
The original trilogy had a simple yet strong and surprising story.
The prequels had their flaws but they nonetheless told a great story of how evil could come to power under the noses of good people.
The story of Skywalker’s rise does not exist. It’s just chaos. People are doing stuff fast, with what appears to be an incredibly high amount of plot holes and an attempt to hide inconsistencies. Even ideas that could have been terrifying fail due to the lack of an overall structure in the story and the fear of surprising fans.
The use of the Force and the depiction of the power structure in the galaxy, is so vague and not in line with what has been established in the previous films, that it almost breaks the logic of the franchise.
If you just want a movie with stunning visuals, a high amount of fan service and one where everything happens as you predicted, then Rise of Skywalker could be a good Star Wars movie.
I loved the music and the visuals, but the lack of good storytelling and respect for all the previous films made me sad.
