Reincarnation (2005) Review

The Japanese film industry has built up a strong reputation for its spooky horror movies, and many of them have been reinvented by Hollywood studios whose philosophy goes something like this: “Why create something new when so much good stuff has already been made Ho!” The Ring, The Grudge and Darkwater are just three examples of Japanese horror films that have been adapted for the Western English-speaking market who would otherwise be unable to enjoy the originals. Subtitles can be difficult to read.

Reincarnation has the same foreboding atmosphere as the films mentioned earlier: it’s a slow-burn, thought-provoking, piece of supernatural horror. The story revolves around a young actress who wins an audition to star in a film based on a real-life hotel massacre. Her role is to kill the last person – a little girl – who has been scaring her for the past few days. When the shooting begins, he begins to experience the murders as if they were actually happening. you understand!?

Anyone familiar with supernatural mysteries like The Sixth Sense (not to mention Takashi Shimizu’s previous films) will be familiar with some plot devices, and will be fully prepared to expect the unexpected. Still, the revelation at the end is a good one and not the only one to say: ‘Look?? We fooled you!’ Although I’m sure it will.

Those expecting a constant orgy of blood, guts and violence will only be disappointed. Even so, there are still some scenes here that don’t fit the satire (well, a kid gets stabbed). The film is more about subtle fear and the power of suggestion, which is usually one of the most effective ways to defuse tension, but here they are guilty of overusing tricks in a predictable way. For example, how often does a character need to be distracted by something they have seen out of the corner of their eye? What really makes this film work is the combination of great storytelling, and a direction that gives it a very deep and intense feel that never lets go. The characters are mostly an extension of the general mood and atmosphere of the film. Under Shimizu’s guidance it’s the supernatural that takes center stage.

Rebirth takes longer than its 95-minute running time, but it’s worth sticking with it for a satisfying conclusion that you’ll want to live again.
