We saw this movie on May 2 at one of AMC’s early preview shows, and I’m so glad we did. Why? Because “video game movies” are things that historically were of the “wait until it’s on TV” type – there’s no real reason to see them on the big screen; They weren’t much different from the games they came from. Detective Pikachu, on the other hand, is a real movie.
Yes, it’s set in a world where Pokémon actually exists, and it can talk to both humans and Pokémon (Doctor Doolittle, anyone?), but unlike a “video game movie”, the plot is just the setting. is not a vehicle. It’s a real mystery/adventure, the characters you care about, both human and not. Twists and surprises and experiences. All part of a great blow.
One thing that surprised me was how amazed I was by the emotions expressed by Pikachu’s character – not only did he feel “real” in the film, his face, ears, body language made the emotion clear and convincing. expressed from It’s hard to explain, it was like a cross between seeing a baby and a puppy… I don’t know how they did it, but when Pikachu was sad, you felt it; When you were happy, you knew…
Finally, I also have to say that we were all concerned about the “Deadpool factor”—which turned out to be a non-issue. Ryan Reynolds is a great actor, and like any great actor, you only see and hear the character he plays – not his previous ones.
