story:
John Carter, a Civil War veteran who was trying to lead a normal life in 1868, was “sought” to join the army, but he declined so he was laid off. He runs away and is chased. Eventually, they meet some Indians, and there is a gunfight. Carter takes refuge in a cave. While there, he encounters someone who has a medal of some sort. When Carter touches it, he finds himself in a place where he can leap to incredible heights, among other things. Later he encounters creatures he has never seen before. He meets a woman who helps him find out that he is on Mars, and learns that there is some sort of disturbance going on.
Civil War vet John Carter is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot-tall lush barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he flees, only to encounter Deja Thoris, Princess of Helium, who is in dire need of a savior.
