Infected (2008)
For years I’ve been watching late night trash in the UK on the Sky3 channel, which shows the kind of movies that the sci-fi channel makes. 99% of what I see is absolutely terrible, but occasionally something decent will come to life (Manator and the so-garbage-it-great Aztec REX are two that spring to mind). Over the years, I’ve been less impressed by the low-budget alien Siege movies, one of which is INFECTED, but I’m glad to find that it fares much better than the usual fare.
Things kick into high gear with the kind of intense plot material you’ll see in one of the early X-FILES episodes. From there we accelerate to the kind of aliens that are already here and in disguise, which allows producers to bypass special effects in favor of human opponents. Eventually, it turns into the usual kind of nonsense, with the heroes being hunted down by their supernatural enemies, while various people are shot/blown up/kidnapped along the way. The film focuses on gruesome effects shots of alien maggots emerging from their human hosts, while saving an overly cheesy CGI shot for late in the proceedings (let’s say reminded me of ’50s B-movies). was given.
Surprisingly, the casting isn’t too bad for this outing, with both Gil Bellows and Maxim Roy proving capable leads with the most talent. While the villains are pretty weak and brash, a couple of “name” actors are reserved for kooky cameo roles (Jud Nelson and Isabella Rossellini), which goes a bit further. Hardly a great movie, but if you are an advocate of this kind of nonsense then you won’t complain as it stands above the rest.
