I laugh when I re-read some negative reviews – in short: it gave me motion sickness so I quit, or his characters didn’t develop enough, too sad and anxious, all of Neil Armstrong’s Events not covered careers, etc. Well, most of these individuals missed the point of the film or did not understand this style of storytelling. This is a first-person account originally told through the eyes of the first person to walk on the Moon. I found it refreshing and not too thin to try to fit your typical Hollywood point of view, too thin for such an epic sweeping story that covers decades and dozens of major figures. It could have been 3-3.5 hours long. Yes, it could have been a TV mini-series or two (or more) movies.
I love that it was told through the eyes of a central figure. Told through the eyes of the man that all the hard work of thousands and billions of dollars were spent to accomplish a goal before the Soviet Union and for mankind – to put a man on the Moon for the first time. I can’t remember a cinematic experience that got me closer to experiencing what it was really like to be in the first hand, in the driver’s seat if you prefer, or better yet, in the face of a massive liquid fuel explosion. Tied in the coffin fixed above.
Anyone who is brave enough to face it, be able to do well in the thick of it and want to do it again and again is beyond words (or conscience). With death and fear all around, no wonder a dark cloud was looming over everyone. I am sure we are all amazed by what has been achieved by NASA’s space missions especially Apollo. The movie Apollo 13 was a really cool story that I thought could bring me closer to being an astronaut. I was wrong.
So, go and look at First Man. Go and let yourself be an astronaut. The first human who was at the top of a huge pyramid of people because before this many people had made the ultimate sacrifice to make a giant leap possible for mankind. I will never look at any other manned spacecraft, past or present, or astronaut in the same way again.
