First Kill (2017) Review

For a Bruce Willis paycheck movie, this modest thriller isn’t half bad. Willis himself sleeps half the entire time, and, as the same director’s “Marauders”, he is overtaken in this case by Hayden Christensen, the more animated second lead. Yes, Christensen outlives Willis, and he’s totally believable as a young businessman who wants to teach his initially frail son to be a man. The plot (Christensen takes his son on a deer hunt, then witnesses an assassination attempt, complications follow) has its fair share of holes, but is generally compelling and twisty, even if You can predict the final turn a mile away. And it’s entirely Willis’ fault – his acting, his mannerisms are too revealing. There’s good fluidity in the camerawork and editing, and many of the scenes are eye-catching, partly due to the jungle setting. Action scenes are also handled well. Miller knows how to chase and shoot. There is some dopey dialogue, and with one exception, the side characters remain anonymous and underdeveloped. Christensen gives a solid performance, and Gethin Anthony shines in the role of a sympathetic bank robber (we don’t get to see the actual robbery). Some plot twists are a bit far-fetched, but they’ll keep you watching. Overall, a move for the prolific Steven C. Miller, even if Willis is sleeping through some of it.
