For Steve Rogers, awakening after decades of suspended animation involves much more than just capturing pop culture; It also means that this old-school idealist must face a world of subtle dangers and difficult moral complexities.
This becomes apparent when director Nick Fury is killed by the mysterious assassin, the Winter Soldier, but not before warning Rogers that SHIELD has been destroyed by his enemies. When Rogers acts on Fury’s warning not to trust anyone there, he is branded as a traitor by the organization.
Now a fugitive, Captain America must get to the bottom of this deadly mystery with the help of Black Widow and her new friend, The Falcon. However, the battle for the Sentinel of Liberty will be costly, with Rogers finding enemies where he least expects them, while learning that the Winter Soldier looks disturbingly familiar.

Captain America: Soldier of the Cold review

Now “The Winter Soldier” is everything a Captain America movie should be. While it retains some of the humor that has now become a trademark of Marvel movies, TWS is more serious than all of them. And this is really where the film is so brave and yes different from any other superhero movie that we have seen.

Which brings me to the most important point, the plot. Of course it’s not going to be the most original or complex film of the century, but there are original screenwriting elements that fall short of modern-day blockbusters. You have (likeable) characters and a mystery they need to solve with a racing clock. It reminded me of a 70’s political paranoia thriller (3 Days of the Condor – Another Radford Link, Parallax Scene, Z) and it’s a welcoming tone that builds on WS to set itself apart from the rest. There are strong scenes about political fear, control and information manipulation but it never feels bloated or overbearing. It aims to entertain, even if he manages to squeeze the audience’s voice on screen through Rogers with a bit of political thought. At one point there’s talk about who’s who which resulted in Every Man for Yourself being one of the most interesting scenes you can see this year. We don’t get this stuff these days!

In addition to the charged plot, the introduction of new characters and mega mayhem on the streets of Washington DC, Ross has found time to inject some emotion into the proceedings (and they must be TWS two and a half hours long!) – Peggy A trip to the shield action, Bucky’s memory recall, Natasha’s kiss about the confrontation, thing about fury. They could have easily skipped these “nonsense,” but the extra running time instead feels adjusted and consistent with a bit more characterization, resulting in something we’re closer to on-screen counterparts.

However, the action took me by surprise. The bar has now been raised. It’s really unbelievable to think that these two directors (of “community” fame) came up with such inventive ways of using Cap’s shield. Finally, the shield can be seen in all its glory. Also, all fist fights (and they are many) are excellent examples and putting glasses to a school of frantic editing (which I really despise) with varied and fast choreography. A spectacular elevator fight sequence is probably truly memorable, while encounters with the Winter Soldier never feel repetitive. The Russo brothers keep changing the game from stealth and cloak missions, to car chases, to gunfire, to dog fights, to fighting battles. There is something here for everyone and it is definitely one of the best I have come across. Impressive given his credit. The real stunt work (backflips, wrestling moves, somersaults, etc.), real fights, and moving away from the superhero duo of the Avengers, Thor and Iron Man is an enjoyable sight. These characters rely on instinct and bullets. Neither more nor less and most of them have some brutal moments for a PG-13 movie (and blood too).

The actors are absolutely brilliant in their roles. While Evans comes across as a slightly arrogant and least interesting character in “Avengers,” here’s where he really shines. For the first time ever, I actually bought what he was bringing to the table. This is a soldier who believed in protecting the people and their freedom. Here however, in the modern era of espionage with many intrigues and political events, he finds himself unable to identify what side he is on and for whom. At one point he even considers himself Fury’s caretaker of terrorist “problems”. The other side of the coin is Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury and Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce. It’s nice to see Jackson expand his role from a 1-minute cameo in “Iron Man” to a full-fledged supporting actor. But the real standout is Robert Redford. Kevin Feige (producer) probably knows how to cast because there hasn’t been a single acting mistake yet. Bringing the heavily-acted Redford into a superhero movie is a bold move indeed and while most movies don’t focus on the talented cast, the Russo brothers here give Redford a lot of close and needed gravitas dialogue that made me “summer” surprised to. “And the “Goofy” blockbuster. Antony Mackie quite convincingly plays the Falcon and it’s great to see a great supporting turn instead of being a comedic sidekick. The Winter Soldier himself is now what you might have expected? Probably the best outside Loki Good villain (!) in Marvel movies. A truly unstoppable and cool killing machine who shows no remorse or regret given his utterly disregarded (and devastating) actions throughout the film. The generally light-heartedness of Shaw fantasy movies manages to bring a bit of danger to the series as he has to act out with his eyes rather than share any scenes of actual dialogue.

Is this perfect? Absolutely not, but it doesn’t look like it’s ever-intoxicating or raising any boring flag. There’s plenty of plot, wit, and sweet character moments to keep anyone satisfied. It is a blockbuster in its finest form, a superhero film with heart, immersive action and a subtle touch of humour. Totally recommended.
