story:

In 1874, in Imperial Russia, the aristocrat Anna Karenina travels from St. Petersburg to Moscow to save the marriage of her brother, Prince Oblonsky, who had an affair with her maidservant. Anna Karenina has a cold marriage with her husband, Count Alexei Karenin, and they have a son. Anna meets Count Vronsky, a cavalry officer at the train station and they feel attracted to each other. He soon learns that Vronsky will propose to Kitty, the younger sister of his sister-in-law Dolly.

Anna satisfactorily resolves her brother’s infidelity and Kitty invites her to stop by for the ball. However, Anna Karenina and Vronsky dance at the ball, attracting the attention of conservative society. Soon they have a love affair that will lead Anna Karenina to a tragic fate.

Wright keeps most of his plot within the confines of a dilapidated theater and his actors use the stage, stalls and behind-the-scenes areas when creating the sets of the late Tsarist St. Actors will walk from one part of the theater to another, changing sets and costumes around them, all with the hustle and bustle of a real theater and lively city.

It’s a stylistic decision that was probably met with skepticism from studio owners and the like, but works incredibly well to bring to life characters that are written by Tolstoy himself.
