Orange is the New Black Review

The show has mega-jumped the political shark in Season 4 and has been completely derailed as it began. The beginning of the show showcased the real-life stereotypes and racial tensions present in any prison in an interesting yet creative way. Now the once interesting characters have turned into cartoonish, ridiculous cliches that, instead of reflecting reality, are trying to reflect what’s going on on social media. The saddest part is that most of the events that the news is trying to imitate have been shown to be contrary to what is seen or untrue, making it look strange now. That’s the risk you take when you film episodes ahead of time without facts.

Season 1 started off on a strong note and for most of Season 2, that’s how it was. The characters were well developed and if not always liked, you can better understand where they are coming from. You knew that even if they made the dumb choice, no one really intended to go to jail. Season 3 was marred by endless backstories that were predictable and exhausting, though sometimes entertaining.

Now it’s almost like a different show altogether, with some of the low budget, amateurish and fictional plot you find on YouTube productions. It’s a sad ending which was a great start, the beginning is the only reason it got 4 stars. The actors don’t feel like they are rooted in the show anymore and the writing has lost a lot of their creativity. Unless Season 5 begins with Piper waking up and Season 4 is a dream sequence ala Dallas, it won’t be worth watching.
